Simulation on Movement of Healthy Human Soft Palate during Respiration

چکیده
INTRODUCTION The compliance of upper airway tissues during respiration could lead to snoring in human subjects and collapse of the airway in patients of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The patterns of dynamic wall movement of human upper airway and the causes of OSA are still not fully understood. This study attempts to simulate the movement of human soft palate during respiration using fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulation.

Background and Objective: Breathing through the nose and mouth is one of the controversial issues during exercise. The present study was scheduled to investigate a quantitative approach to habitual versus the obligatory switching point from nasal to oronasal breathing during exercise as well as coincidence of soft palate movement as the main aims of this study, that has not been studied previou...
متن کاملMovement of the human upper airway during inspiration with and without inspiratory resistive loading.
The electromyographic (EMG) activity of human upper airway muscles, particularly the genioglossus, has been widely measured, but the relationship between EMG activity and physical movement of the airway muscles remains unclear. We aimed to measure the motion of the soft tissues surrounding the airway during normal and loaded inspiration on the basis of the hypothesis that this motion would be a...

Electromyographic (EMG) activity of the airway muscles suggest that genioglossus is the primary upper airway dilator muscle. However, EMG data do not necessarily translate into tissue motion and most imaging modalities are limited to assessment of the surfaces of the upper airway. In this study, we hypothesized that genioglossus moves rhythmically during the respiratory cycle and that the motio...

PURPOSE The purpose of our study was to introduce an ultrafast MR imaging technique of the pharynx as a diagnostic tool for viewing the mechanism of obstruction in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. METHODS Six healthy volunteers and 16 patients with obstructive sleep apnea were examined on a 1.5-T whole-body imager using a circular polarized head coil. Ultrafast two-dimensional fast low-...
متن کاملA Rare Case of Epignathus Combined with Soft Cleft Palate, Bifida Tongue, and Lingual Lipoma
Congenital tumors of the oral cavity are not common.Teratoids are the most common tumors, and in rare cases are associated with cleft soft palate. In this paper a rare case of Epignathus with cleft soft palate, bifida tongue, jaw malocclusion, tongue lipoma, Hypertelorism and low-set ears has been presented. A female infant with a large mass covered with skin and hair arising from hard palate, ...
